Community
Guidelines

Community Guidelines to support a fun and thriving music and dance community at our Vancouver ECD events.

This is a community event open to all and our goal is to have fun dancing together. People from different cultures and generations may interpret things differently and we always strive to provide grace and respect.

Speak up if something does not seem quite right and let an organizer know.

We strive to be inclusive, welcoming and respectful:

  • We welcome dancers young and old, new and experienced, from all backgrounds and cultures.

  • We treat each other in a respectful and friendly way and consider the safety of dancers with less experience or physical limitations.

  • We offer gentle cues if we notice someone is confused. We try to refrain from verbally directing people during the dance.

  • We allow people to dance any role or position regardless of gender identity or expression.

  • We arrive sober because dancing involves physical proximity and spatial awareness.

  • We arrive fragrance-free to accommodate those who are sensitive.

  • We stay home if we are feeling unwell.

We communicate openly and practice consent:

  • When we ask someone to dance, we graciously accept ‘no thanks’ as an answer.

  • We ask potential partners which role they would like to dance without assuming.

  • We respect physical limitations and preferences, including for eye contact, physical contact, and speed. We actively seek consent if we are unsure.

  • We never insist that someone exceed their comfort level.

  • We volunteer our individual needs and preferences clearly.

We support the community:

  • We support local and visiting musicians and callers and try to keep our fees accessible for all.

  • We give back in other ways – helping at regular dance events, inviting new friends, meeting newer dancers and musicians, volunteering for local events and committees.

Thank you to Portland Country Dance Community for allowing us to adapt their community dance guidelines.
